I just wanted to thank yall for starting this tribe. An open mind about meat eating is very important to the open discussion about sustainability. I'll illustrate. Many grass land regions of mountain nor-cal have poor soils. In order to grow food crops on these lands, large amounts of fertilizers and water would be needed. Conversely, cattle can forage these soils, eating many of the grasses that are of low to zero nutrient qulality to us. In this way, a cow converts the forage of a nominally fertile area into an amazingly energy rich food stuff for us Peoples. So, a grazing cow is actually a much more sustainable and responsible means of food production in this case... Aren't cows nice, they cruise around and eat stuff we can't, then they kindly turn it into steak. Protect open space, conserve resources, live sustainably. EAT MEAT!

Sun, June 17, 2007 - 12:02 AMYay! I agree. The key, of course, is that the cows are actually grazing--not shackled up in pens. -

Re: Foragers feed sustainability
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 10:25 AMAre you high? Do you know how much open space is taken up to grow food for cows? They only graze in open areas for a short time...just long enough to eat everything that might sustain a herd of elk or deer that do the same thing the cows do. But hey...what ever helps you rationalize taking part and supporting an industry that is raping the earth and wildlife. Perhaps you might consider buying a hunting tag for elk and deer if you really want to think of yourself as a person that is both a meat eater and into conservation. Your very existence necessitates population control of several species...especially if you eat beef. Just think...you'll be helping to fund wildlife management agencies and participating in the most vital part of the management process. Plus you wont be ingesting all the terrible shit that's found in every bite of beef you put in your mouth. Theres a movie called fast food nation...you should rent it. -

Sun, January 27, 2008 - 10:05 PMUm, do you eat dairy? If so, please shut up. -

Re: Foragers feed sustainability
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 8:22 AMNo…I don’t eat dairy. Way too much puss in the milk. Plus I hate the fact that when all those cows are milked they have to be “shackled up in pens” like you said. But hey I’ll shut up. I thought with a tribe called ethical carnivores topics and ideas like this could be discussed and possibly embraced. Maybe you should start a new one called “How to rationalize being a carnivore in the modern world.”

Re: Foragers feed sustainability
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 4:29 PMI couldn't agree more. It's not like I'm living in a teepee out in the woods, growing my own food and making compost with all my waist. All I'm saying is let's not kid ourselves about the reality of our impact on the earth. If you want to eat beef go ahead, but don't try to come up with some way to feel good about it...like cows grazing on the open range is positive in any way. And if someone does want to search for ways to perhaps slow the inevitable douching of humanity down with a few adjustments...accept it or reject it, but don't tell me to shut up. -

Re: Foragers feed sustainability
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 8:38 PMGrazing has a place, and some cows are grazed only and given no supplemental feed or fattening. Still, with so many people it's not feasible to feed everyone eating meat off of grazed animals. Your post seems somewhat like you are trying to justify your meat habit. I justify mine by not being willing to eat what I consider a sub standard diet just because everyone else is too fucking stupid to stop over breeding and destroying everything. I may actually graze a cow or two on our place for personal consumption. There used to be grazers here on this land of some kind, but they are all gone now. Deer don't graze grass to speak of. They eat forbes and browse. I think grazers could have a place here, but it's all about the context and having an ethic that values sustainability and looks hard at the effects of one's actions. Grazing lands are usually grazed pretty hard which can fuck them up and impact native plant populations. I think your idea is basically sound, but not in the modern context of current population densities.
